Osteopaths utilise a wide variety of techniques to improve joint mobility, reduce tension in soft tissues, improve circulation and free trapped and irritated nerves to bring freedom from pain and discomfort. Listed below are the main techniques used:
Traditional (Structural) Osteopathy
This is what most people expect from an Osteopath. It involves Manipulation (clicking joints), Mobilisation (rhythmic movements of joints) and stretching of the soft tissues (Massage and other techniques.) All our Osteopaths use these techniques.
Cranial Osteopathy
This is a very gentle, safe but effective technique employed for a variety of patients, but commonly known for the treatment of unsettled babies, but may aid the treatment in other conditions such as headaches. Rachel is qualified to use these techniques
Visceral Osteopathy
Not well known, there is a growing movement of Osteopaths using Visceral Osteopathic techniques. We use 2 methods of application – one utilises rhythmic movements that are thought to stimulate the body’s circulation and lymphatic systems along with relaxing the soft tissues and fascia, and the other, which is more subtle uses the natural motility of the organs. These techniques reduce tension, thereby improving function. Rachel has completed courses in these interesting techniques. Please ask if you have a condition that you think she may be able to help you with
Acupuncture
All the Osteopaths are qualified and trained to use western style Acupuncture. This method is where needles are safely inserted locally to aid pain relief rather than constitutionally. Needles are left in for less than a minute and are optional. They are utilised as an adjunct to the osteopathic treatment offered and can be effective in aiding the healing process
Babies and Children
Osteopathy has proved helpful for treating unsettled babies. Rachel uses the very gentle Cranial Osteopathic techniques. Children of all ages may benefit from Osteopathy, whether following an injury or from a more chronic condition. They run the clinic using gentle Cranial Osteopathy as the main method of treatment and all have attended Paediatric courses. Osteopathy is a safe treatment suitable for Babies and Children.
