About Helena
Helena is a highly experienced Holistic Therapist: fully qualified in Clinical Hypnotherapy, NLP, and Compassion Focused Mindfulness, along with many other areas of personal development, healing, and creative self expression. She has worked for decades, supporting individuals to transcend limiting and often subconscious habits and beliefs, which may be preventing them from moving forward and leading a happy, fulfilling life. Her work has evolved from a desire to share what has helped transform my own life with others.
For several decades, Helena worked in public health and education, in the field of mental well-being and personal growth. Now as a Clinical Hypnotherapist, and Compassion Focused Mindfulness Practitioner, she blends evidence -based therapeutic practices, with deeply nurturing somatic (body-centered) approaches.
Helena specializes in supporting individuals who find themselves at a pivotal crossroads; searching for deeper meaning, or a new chapter in their lives. True transformation requires the body to feel safe.
Compassion Focused Mindfulness helps calm the nervous system – the hardware of your body, whilst Clinical Hypnotherapy allows us to rewrite subconscious beliefs; effectively updating the software of your mind. We learn to gently and patiently quiet the ‘inner critic’ and mental chatter, whilst reprogramming and rebalancing the conditioned responses of the body. When these changes occur, our own intuition and clarity is able to spontaneously shine through.
At this point, we often find that former ‘addictive’ behaviours, patterns or habits – frequently arising from a misguided attempt to comfort ourselves – naturally begin to fall away. When we become clear about what really inspires us, we can begin to explore the practical considerations which are necessary to move towards our goals in a consistent and sustainable way.
Ultimately this work is about learning to trust ourselves; aligning with a greater sense of meaning, and balancing our aspirations with grounded purposeful action. By uniting the mind, body and creative spirit, we create a powerful foundation for lasting change.
Clinical Hypnotherapy
Although things are gradually changing, hypnotherapy continues to be misunderstood. Many still imagine the misleading TV generated stereotype of the hypnotist waving a pocket watch and putting his client’s into a ‘trance’ and then Hey Presto! The person’ comes round’, and all their problems are magically ‘cured’!
In reality hypnotherapy is a collaborative process which requires the individual to play an active role throughout the session, if they are to remain ‘in’ hypnosis – and the richness of experience can be improved with practice.
The word ‘trance‘, can more accurately be described as a potential change in brainwave patterns from the usual beta waves associated with day to day functioning, to an increase in ‘theta’ waves especially, which are associated with relaxation and creative thinking. In this relaxed but alert frame of mind the individual is most likely to be receptive to positive ideas and suggestions.
Whilst hypnotherapy is well known for helping people access the sub-conscious aspects of the mind, what is lesser known is that it can also be used to help access the super-conscious aspects – leading to insight , intuition and inspiration.
Although one session may be all that is needed for a boost in positivity and inspiration, real and lasting change takes willingness and commitment. For this reason at least 3 sessions are recommended. However, each person and situation is unique. Therefore Treatment Plans and sessions are always centered around the core values, preferences and wishes of each person, and all work is agreed in ongoing discussion with each individual.
Hypnotherapy feels different to different people. You may experience:
- Feeling more absorbed in your imagination
- Feel alert with a sense of heightened awareness of the present moment
- Feeling more relaxed than normal
- Feel as if you are drifting off or sleepy, but aware of the therapist’s words
Whilst a person may relax very deeply they can immediately ‘come out’ of hypnosis simply by opening their eyes – They are in full control and can also choose whether or not to follow the suggestions.
Hypnotherapy in Conjunction with other Therapies
Hypnotherapy has been shown to enhance the efficacy of other therapeutic approaches:
Compassionate Mindfulness and Hypnotherapy – A perfect combination
A compassion based approach encourages us to develop the sort of kindness for ourselves that so many of us reserve only for our nearest and dearest
Mindfulness techniques can help us to ‘unlearn’ some of our unconscious conditioned emotional and physiological responses, which may be the result of trauma and/or unresolved issues or memories.
We start by working directly with the feelings and sensations in the body, and teach ways of literally changing the chemical reactions of the brain and body.
This paves the way to move forward and work towards positive goals from a place of greater freedom.
NLP
Neuro -Linguistic Programming can be used alongside hypnotherapy to help people re frame negative thought patterns, teach effective communication skills and anchor positive emotions.
CBT
A Cognitive-Behavioral Approach to hypnotherapy can be used to create highly structured and goal orientated treatment plans.
This can include learning practical skills such as Assertiveness, Socratic Questioning, Time Management, Problem Solving, and Goal Planning
